Black Belts manage special projects within the company. These projects focus on reducing internal cost, decreasing cycle time, improving organization and reducing process variation. They use six sigma skills to complete the project. Black Belts can state the potential cost savings of projects. Also, they document the final cost savings after project implementation.
Master Black Belts train process leaders in six sigma skills. This includes project management tools, data analysis, team work, ANOVA, SPC, and quality software tools.
They may serve as consultants to the company’s senior management team. Make recommendations on projects and strategic planning. They improve the synergy between departments by encouraging the breakdown of departmental barriers. Black Belts work as change agents within the company. They interface with and lead multiple cross functional teams.
Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belts use lean tools to improve departmental and process organization. They apply time study flowcharts, 5S and Kaizen theory for the lean projects. They utilize Design of Experiments to reduce process and product variation. Black Belts measure and document the improvements with variable and attribute data.
Black Belts are usually certified. One gains this certificate by completing a series of green belt and black belt improvement projects. A review board consisted of a Master Black Belt, and Senior Management reviews the material and then certifies the student. Most Black Belts receives this training from their employer but they may attend outside schooling as well.
