Waste Reduction / Lean Methods of Manufacturing

Ford, GM, and Chrysler were one of the strongest companies before but right now loosing their business to their Japanese and Korean rivals, why couldn’t “The big three” come up with waste reduction/lean methods of manufacturing is this happening because of cultural difference? Or marketing? Or business model?

Started back in the 40's when accountants began using absorbtion. Forced Ford out of HEnry Ford's ideals towards the make more inventory to absorb more labor concenpt. Wall Street believed the books and would only accept that idea, and "LEAN" was pushed back 30 years.
