Sample selection for inspection

Hello,

This is regarding the incoming sampling inspection. We use ISO 2859 tables to select the sampling plan at the incoming stage.

Suppose we have received for inspection some item 20,000 pcs. These items were received in boxes each containing 250pcs. So that we received 80 boxes (20,000/250).

Suppose we use general inspection level one (G-I) from the AQL table. As per the AQL table, we have to select 125 PCs for inspection.

So we have,
80 boxes each contain 250pcs and sample size 125pcs.

How do we select 125 PCs from those 80 boxes? Is there any proper method/standard for the selection?

In theory, you want to select your pieces randomly. You can use random generator software to identify which pieces need to be inspected. You would have to categorize the sequence of the pieces. For example box 1 of the 80 boxes has pieces 1 through 250, box 2 would have 251 through 500, and so on. If the software said to select piece 302, piece 5, and piece 451, you would randomly select one piece from box 1 and 2 pieces from box 2. This process repeats for your sample size of 125.

To make it easier, you can set up a system to only open 5 boxes and randomly select 25. This doesn't completely meet the standard but it should work to catch any potential issues.

Whatever method you choose, be sure to document the steps.

Also, I would consider using Snap Sampling Plans! found on this site, to calculate your sampling criteria. ISO 2859 uses the same tables as Ansi Z which is included in the software.
