From my experience, usually bosses don't want to go through a long analytical report to see the core problem and to see what kind of action had been taken to help in resolving the problem; they usually prefer to summarize the whole report in points and to calculate those mentioned points to money to see the real effect on what you have done on their outcome and customer beneficial which will definitely reflect on the final target and achievement. if you can not do that so your Idea and your effort will be gone with the wind and will not feel it...so having a great ideas is not easy but also selling those ideas to your boss to help in implementation and applying is the hardest part.
